Crude oil Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are Hydrocarbons ?
Compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen atoms
What is it called when carbon atoms form bonds with other carbon atoms ?
Formation of hydrocarbon chains
Do hydrocarbons have the same boiling point ?
No
What happens when the hydrocarbon chains get longer ?
The boiling point increases
What is crude oil ?
A mixture of hydrocarbons
How does crude oil get separated ?
Fractional distillation
How is crude oil formed ?
Remains of dead marine animals/plants
Remains sank to bottom of sea
Covered by sand and other sediments
Layer on layer of sediment built up
Pressure and heat caused the remains to break down
What are by products of burning hydrocarbons ?
CO2 + H2O
Advantages of hydrogen as fuel :
Produced from water ; renewable
Only produces water ; does not contribute to global warming
Ignites easily
Disadvantages of hydrogen as a fuel :
Needs large amounts of electricity for electrolysis
Storage needs heavy pressurised containers
Forms an explosive mixture with air
What is the fire triangle ?
Heat
Fuel Oxygen
How can you remove each of the fire triangle ?
Oxygen : C02 and fire blankets
Heat : Water
Fuel : Trees
What happens to crude oil before it entered fractional distillation ?
Boils/vaporises
How is the boiling pint correlated to the column when a compound is collected ?
Lower boiling point
Higher in column
What are fractions ?
Mixtures contain hydrocarbon compounds
With similar chain lengths and boiling points
How are the molecules of hydrocarbons being held together ?
Intermolecular forces
