Crude Oil Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is distillation?
Process used to separate liquids that have different boiling point.
Heating- evaporating - cooling - condensing
Describe fractional distillation?
25 degrees top
Refinery glass- bottled glass
Naphtha - making chemicals
Kerosene - aircraft fuel
Diesel oil - train, car, buss fuel
Fuel oil - ship, power station fuel
Residue - Bitumen ( roads)
350 degrees bottom
Properties of the top fraction products?
- low boiling point
- very volatile
- flows easily
- ignites easily
Properties of bottom fractions?
- high boiling points
- not volatile
- doesn’t flow easily
- doesn’t ignite easily
What is the alkane formula?
CnH2n+2
What is complete combustion?
When fuel burn with plenty of oxygen to react with. During this process CO2 is released.
What is incomplete combustion?
When fuel burns with insufficient air to react with causing carbon monoxide to be released.
What is biodiesel?
Made from rapeseed oil and other plant oils. Can be used in diesel powered cars without any modifications needed to the car.
What is bioethanol?
Made by fermenting sugars, can only be used in modified engines.
Ethical issues of biofuels?
- crops that could be used for foods are being used for fuel.
- more people are needed to make biofuels
- increase income for farmers
- lower fuel prices
