Crystallization Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is atomic structure?
Mechanical and physical properties of materials based on atom arrangement and behavior
Grains are made of small repeating __________.
Crystals
An area where dendrites meet is called a _________ _________.
Grain boundary
What is allotropy?
The ability for a metal to exist in more than one crystal structure
What is an alloy?
Metal made of 2 or more elements, at least one being metallic
What are the 3 types of crystal structure?
1) BCC: Body Centered Cubic, 9 atoms one at each corner and one in the centre
2) FCC: Face Centered Cubic, 14 atoms one at each corner and one at the centre of each six faces
3) HCP: Hexagonal Close Packed, 17 atoms one at each corner one in the center of each face and three midplane interior atoms
What is referenced by solute and solvent when talking about metals?
Solvent - Present in greatest amount
Solute - denote an element present in smaller amounts
What can cause errors during crystal forming?
1) Impurities
2) Thermal stress due to rapid cooling
3) Uneven solidification
4) Plastic deformation
What are the 3 types of crystal defects?
1) Point defect
2) Line defects
3) Interfacial defects
