8 Principles:

  • Personal data must be obtained lawfully and fairly
  • Personal Data must be held for a specified purpose
  • Personal Data must be adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • Personal Data must be kept up-to-date and accurate
  • Personal Data must not be kept longer than necessary
  • Personal Data must be processed in accordance with data subjects rights
  • Personal Data must be kept securely
  • Personal Data must not be transferred outside the EU without permission

Computer Misuse Act

A

L1 - Unauthorised access
- Accessing secure parts of a computer, that they are unauthorised to access
- In organisations, accessing secure parts that are beyond your rights
L2 - Unauthorised Access with intent to commit a Crime
L1 + intent to commit another crime
L3 - Unauthorised Modification
Includes intent to:
- Impair the operation of an PC
- Prevent or hinder access to a program
- Impair he operation of any program or reliability of data

Protects individuals/organisations intellectual data. It protects:

  • Income for the authors, allows the author to license the data
  • Cost of creating the product can cost thousands to produce
  • Quality of Produce - pirates often altar products to bypass security
  • Alteration Protection - Altering programs can have unintended aftereffects.
