Cultural Internalization Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is cultural relativism?
The idea that all cultures are good
Does cultural relativism align with Self-determination theory? Which practices are most difficult to internalize?
They do align! Practices that do not align with the basic psychological needs are harder to internalize as STD theory suggests
What point did Dr. Koestner use the movie My BIg Fat Greek Wedding to illustrate?
It is common that parents want to pass their culture onto their children but it can sometimes be a hard sell
What is cultural internalization?
Process by which cultural beliefs and practices are adopted by the individual and then enacted in the absence of immediate external contingencies or constraints.
What is Deci and Ryan’s theory of internalization?
1) Children are willing and even active participants in the process
2) There are different processes by which internalization occurs: introjection, and identification and integration
3) These different internalization processes result in qualitatively different styles of self-regulation
4) the social context (parenting) influences which internalization process and regulatory style occurs
What is introjection versus identification and integration?
Introjection: taking in a value or regulatory process but not accepting it as one’s one
ex) going to bible school but you don’t like it
Identification and Integration: fully assimilating a regulation with one’s core sense of self
ex) wanting to learn your parents’ native language to connect more with your heritage
What was Michelle Downie’s finding regarding cultural internalization of host and heritage cultures and adjustment?
Study measuring the degree to which immigrants fully internalize their host and heritage cultures and how it impacts their adjustment
- asked questions about heritage cultural and host culture
RESULTS: specific links between internalization of each culture and how indiivudals felt in those cultural settings. Signifigant associations between bi-cultural integration and global well-being
What factor is critical to successful cultural internalization?
Experiences of autonomy are critical, autonomy support and autonomous motivation
What are the differences between individualistic and collectivistic cultures and their thoughts on autonomy support?
Individualistic: priority given to individual goals and preferences,
Collectivistic: priority given to needs and traditions of a collective,
Both can internalize either individualistic or collectivistic goals.
If autonomy support was greater, more internalized (identifcation and integration), if not, more introjection. More common for collectvistic cultures to be less autonomy supportive.
What is the difference between an egalitarian and heirarchical cultures?
egalitarian: every treated as equal and deserve equal rights and oppurtunities
Hierarchical: a system which people are arranged in order of their importance or rank.
