Subculture
-Minority group within a majority with its own distinct norms and values
-Goths, emos, punks
Willis- Subcultures
‘The lads’ subculture formed a rebellious subculture that rejected school but led them into working-class jobs.
High culture
-Cultural products and activities associated with a minority elitest group
-The opera, ballet, golf
-Bourdieu= high cult. is ina superiour position because the capitalist class uses its economic and political power to impose their worth
Bourdieu- high culture
argues that high culture is a tool of the ruling class used to assert dominance, maintain privilege, and reproduce social inequality through cultural capital and symbolic power.
Capitalism
-A modern economic system based on the private ownership of businesses in order to seek greedy profit
Marcuse- Capitalism
-Argues that capitalism maintains its power by creating false needs that keep individuals trapped in consumerism, distracting them from real freedom and critical thought. This results in a conformist society where ppl accept the status quo without resistance.
Consumer Culture
-Someone’s status and identity shaped b their material goods
-Young= bulimic society
Young- Consumer culture
-we live in a bulimic society, where people are constantly exposed to consumer culture (through the media) but many are excluded from participating in it due to poverty, unemployment, or social inequality.
-Creates a culture of inclusion by consumption; identity and status tied to material goods.
Global Culture
-World wide shared culture, through a large proportion of the world we live in
-learn from other cultures
-Seabrook= Marxist, manly western and american culture is spreading- cultural imperialism
Culture Hybridity
-process of combining 2 or more cultures to create a new culture
Popular cUlture
-Cultural products and activities that are enjoyed by the majority of a population, seen as shallow and easy to consume activities
-mass consumption, manufactured to brainwash
-Sfrinati= Postmodernist, pop culture has saturated society with a massive choice of cultural products and styles. No longer a cler cut between high and popular culture
Habermas- pop culture
-Popular culture has contributed to the dumbing down of public discourse.
-Mass media replaces dialogue with passive consumption- offers superficial entertainment and sensationalism
-Culture is simplified, standardised and designed for mass appeal.
