Culture
A way of life.
Norms
The things people do in a society, behaviours that are considered normal and expected.
Values
Things that a culture assigns importance to.
Relative
Things aren’t fixed, they depend on environment. Change across time and place.
Deviance
Behaviour that goes against the norms of a group.
Customs
Traditional, regular norms associated with certain situations.
Status
The position of someone in society.
Ascribed/achieved status
Status someone is given/status someone earns.
Roles
Expectations of people with certain statuses as to how they should behave.
High culture
Culture for the upper class/elite in a society.
Example - Opera, ballet, polo.
Popular culture
Activities and interests shared by the vast majority of a society.
Example - TV, Tabloid newspapers.
Subculture
Culture within a culture, has own norms and values separate from main culture.
Example - chavs, punks.
Cultural diversity
When lots of cultures coexist in the same place.
Cultural hybridity
When parts of multiple cultures merge to create a new culture.
Consumer culture
The idea that a culture derives value from buying things and brands.
