What is ethnocentrism?
Seeing the world only from ones own cultural perspective and believing this one perspective is normal and correct
What is cultural bias?
The act of interpreting and judging behavior and psychological characteristics of one culture by holding them to the standards of your own.
What is cultural relativism?
The idea that behavior can only be understood if the cultural context is taken into consideration.
What is an etic approach?
Where a construct from one’s culture is applied inappropriately to another.
What is an emic approach?
Studies one culture from within without a primary focus on cross-cultural difference.
Explain one example of cultural bias.
Yerke’s Army Test - An army intelligence test made for recruiting soldiers. The items on the tests were very specific to American culture. African-Americans were at the bottom of the list whereas white Americans were at the top considering they were more likely to know the answers.
Explain one example of ethnocentrism
Ainsworth’s Strange Situation was developed based on American standards and norms and the strange situation found that german children were more insecure-avoidant but that doesnt mean german mothers are less sensitive than american mothers it means that german culture value that children should grow up to be independent therefore they reacted differently when judged on american standards. this is also an example of imposed etic
