culture bias Flashcards
(7 cards)
bias and universality
anything that distorts truth in research
university = assuming findings apply to everyone , ignoring cultural differences
e.g
Ainsworth attachment styles , based on western norms , assumed all children behave the same
cultural bias
one culture favoured over other
- most psychologists, come from western indivualist cultures, = unrepresentative conclusions
ethnocentrism
belief that own culture is superior
e.g Ainsworth , viewed other attachment behaviours as insecure just bc it didnt fit American norms
- Japanese children showed more separation anxiety , seen as insecure
- German children showed independence , seen as insecure
cultural relativism
cultures can only be understood from within that culture
- use emic approach = study behaviour from inside culture , instead of applying ideas from their own culture
e.g miranda et al
found 90% obedience rate in Spanish students , diff to milgrams us results
strength , awareness
more aware , try to avoid ethnocentrism
= research thats more global , and relevant to diverse cultures
strength , development
countries egg India /china , developing own culture specific theories
- help challenge western dominated views , add diff perspective to psych
limitation , les problematic
not much induvalist and collectivist culture divide today , many studies show no strong differences
cultural bias , less problmeatic now
