Define culture
A learned, shared, symbolic and dynamic system of beliefs, values and practices.
What is intangible culture?
The knowledge, beliefs and values that are learned in a society.
What does material culture refer to?
The physical objects created, used and valued by a culture.
What are cultural universals?
Traits or patterns of behavior shared by all human cultures worldwide.
Define diffusion in cultural context.
The spread of cultural knowledge, ideas and customs from one group to another.
What is innovation in terms of culture?
A new cultural product or idea created within a society through creativity or discovery.
What is a meme?
Units of information (e.g. skills, songs, stories) that are copied from person to person.
What does diffusionism propose?
The theory that aspects of civilization were developed in very few places and then spread from those places to the rest of the world.
Define syncretism.
The creation of a new religious or cultural idea or custom by combining aspects of multiple cultures.
What is acculturation?
The process of cultural and psychological change that results following the interaction of two or more cultures.
Define assimilation.
The process of acquiring the cultural characteristics of a dominant group in order to fit in.
What is socialisation?
The process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society.
What is culture shock?
The feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is experiencing an unfamiliar culture for the first time.
Define globalization.
The increasing interconnectedness of the world through the flow of ideas, information, people and goods.
What does glocalisation mean?
The adaptation of global ideas, products, or practices to fit local cultures and preferences, blending global and local influences.
Define homogenisation in cultural context.
The process of cultures becoming more uniform, often due to globalization and dominant influences.
What is kinship?
Being related (especially by blood).
What is multiculturalism?
An approach that supports the presence of multiple distinct cultural groups within a society.
Define norms.
The rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society.
What is a ritual?
A sequence of symbolic actions that expresses and reinforces cultural beliefs.
Define subculture.
A cultural group within a larger culture, often with contrasting values or customs.
What is a symbol?
A thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract.
Define taboo.
A social or religious custom that forbids or restricts certain behaviors, objects, or topics because they are considered sacred, dangerous, or inappropriate.
