Current Electricity Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is the current electricity?
It is the continuous flow charge
What does you call a group of electrons?
Coloumb
What do electrical currents do?
Transfer energy thats why a light bulb can glow
What is required for a current to flow
- a source of electrical energy
- closed circuit
- conductors in a circuit
What components must be attached to each other?
- from the one terminal of cell / battery
- along wires or conductors
- through the filament of incandescent bulbs or other components
- back to the other terminal of the cell / better
What is the minimum components in a circuit?
- a source of energy
- conductors
- something to give an indication that the current is flowing
What are connecting wires
- made from metals that are good conductors
- transfer electrical charges over short or long distances
What is a battery?
is a combination of more that on cell connector in series
How do a battery work?
cells have chemical energy
the chemical energy only reacts when a circuit is completed
it is converted into electrical energy
the electrical energy charges is delivered to the circuit
What does the cell create?
a potential difference (tension) by supplying electrical kinetic energy to electrical energy charges
What is a switch
used to open and close circuit
Name reasons why a circuit can be incomplete
- open switch
- a loose contact of the switch
- a broken wire
- a broken filament in the bulb
What is a resistor
is a circuit component that offer resistance against the flow of charge
What does a resistor have a effect on?
magnitude of the electrical current
The higher the resistance?
the weaker the current
How does a old fashioned light bulb work?
- There’s a resistor wire connected to 2 contact points
- One part connected to screw part
- other part connected to a knob at the bottom
- Filament heats up until it is white hot
- electrical energy converted to heat energy
What are the effects of an electrical current?
- heating effect
- magnetic effect
- chemical effect
What does the electrical current transfer?
Particles in the conductor
What does a filament of a bulb have?
- high resistance
- does not melt easily
What is a short circuit?
When the electrical current takes the path of lowest resistance
What are fuses?
Spesial wires that melt if the circuit overheat
Why is a current broken?
The fuse melt
What is the magnetic effect?
A current -carrying conductor causes a magnetic field around the conductor
What happen when there is no current?
The compass needle return to the north - south direction
