- What is deterrence?
Sends a broad message to members of a given society that crime won’t be tolerated. (general)
(individual) prevents the individual from repeating the same offences in light of their experience.
Based on conditioning through vicarious reinforcement.
- What is incapacitation?
Offender i taken out of society to stop reoffending.
- What is retribution?
The level of suffering should be proportionate to the seriousness of the offence. ‘an eye for an eye’.
- What is rehabilitation?
Prison is not purely to punish but also to reform. It should provide the opportunities and treatments.
- What is recidivism?
(Reoffending) tells us whether prison is an effective deterrent.
Two limitations?
Negative effect on psychological effect on prisoners. 119 committed suicide, and 29% rose from last year.
They may learn to become better offenders in prison because of the ‘education’ by others.
One strength?
Provides opportunity for training and rehabilitation as they have a possibility of living a crime-free life.
