What is rapid tooling?

Rapid tooling enables the manufacture of standard machine tools quickly.
What is Rapid manufacturing?
This is the automated manufacture of saleable products directly from 3D CAD data.
Rapid manufacturing advantages
It is cost effective for low volume and small components as it eliminates the need for expensive tooling.
It can also provide custom-made components to the customer’s exact specifications.
What is a CNC lathe?
A machine tool controlled by a computer to shape metal by rotating a work piece and using a stationary cutting tool which is also controlled by the computer to remove material.
CNC lathe advantages
Very precise and parts are produced consistently. They can be programmed to perform complex operations quickly and efficiently and automate many tasks, reducing the need for manual labour.
CNC lathe disadvantages
Expensive to maintain
What is a CNC router?
A machine controlled by a computer program to move a router bit to precisely cut and shape a variety of materials. The router bit rotates allowing it to cut, carve, or mill materials into specific shapes and designs.
CNC router advantages
Very precise, accurate and parts are produced consistently. Eliminates human error and minimises waste.
CNC router disadvantage
High set up costs, maintenance and very loud.
What is a CNC milling machine?
A computer-controlled machine that uses rotating cutters that have multiple teeth to engage with the material removing material from a workpiece, creating precise shapes and details.
CNC milling machine advantages
Can create complex shapes, very accurate and precise. Parts are produced consistently at an increased speed than regular milling which also eliminates human error.
CNC milling machine disadvantage
High set up costs and maintenance
What is a CNC laser?
A machine that uses a computer controlled, high-powered laser beam to cut, mark, or engrave a variety of materials.
CNC laser advantages
Very precise, accurate and parts are produced quickly.
CNC laser disadvantage
Limitations in material thickness and potential for heat-affected zones.
What is a CNC vinyl cutter?
A computer-controlled machine that uses a blade to cut shapes and designs from thin, self-adhesive vinyl.
CNC vinyl cutter advantages
Very precise, accurate and parts are cut quickly.
CNC vinyl cutter disadvantage
Not ideal for very small or complex designs and can be time-consuming to weed out unwanted material. Also the blade has to be maintained often.
