Q

xxx-lol

A

beta blocker (propranolol, atenolol, metroprolol)

* DO NOT give with ASTHMA, BRONCHIAL CONSTRICTIVE DISEASE!!!*

Antihypertensive. Blocks beta-adrenergic receptors in heart, decreases excitability of the heart, reduces cardiac workload and O2 consumption. Lowers BP.

Check BP before giving (hypotension)

  • Orthostatic Hypotension
  • Do not D/C abruptly (2wks)
  • Blocks normal signs of Hypoglycemia (sweating, tachycardia). Monitor Blood glucose!!

Contraindicated in uncompensated HF & pulmonary edema

Q

xxx-pril

A

ACE inhibitors (benazepril, captopril, quinapril)
Antihypertensive. Blocks ACE in lungs from converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II (powerful vasoconstrictor).
Decreased aldosterone secretions leading to sodium and fluid loss, hyperkalemia.
Take on empty stomach
Check BP before giving (hypotension)
First dose phenomenon of hypotension

*Orthostatic Hypotension, cough, avoid K supplements

Q

xxx-dipine

A

calcium channel blockers (amlodipine, nifedipine)

Slow the HR and decrease BP (check HR and BP before). Inhibits mvmt of Calcium ions across membrane or cardiac and arterial muscle cells. Results in slowed impulse conduction, depression of myocardial contractility, dilation of coronary arteries.

ADE: Constipation, AV block
No grapefruit juice
