cycle Flashcards
Transpiration
- Water drawn from the soil by plants
- Then evaporated into the atmosphere from leaves and stems
drainage basin
- an area of land drained by a river and its tributaries
- includes water found in the water table and surface run-off.
- There is an imaginary line separating drainage basins called a watershed.

stores
Atmosphere
Hydrosphere - water source
Biosphere - soil store
Ground store - Aquifer
Evaporation
Liquid - gas
Evapotranspiration
Sum of evaporation from the land surface plus transpiration from plants
Sublimation
Conversion between solid and gas - No liquid stage
Precipitation
Input of water to drainage basin
rain, snow, hail, sleet
Throughfall
Precipitation penetrates through the canopy
Reaches soil surface by drip
Stemflow
Water running down a plant stem or tree trunks
infiltration
Water soaks or filters into the soil
Percolation
Gravity flow of water within the soil
Groundwater flow
It is governed by amount of water in system
Base flow
Water from the ground, flowing into channel over a long time with a certain delay
Interception
Precipitation that doesn’t reach the soil
Intercepted by leaves, branches of plants and forest floor
Condensation
Water vapour in the atmosphere is changed into water
fog, dew, mist, frost
Rock
Soil and materials
Underneath soil and above ground - eruptions
Soil
Unconsolidated mineral and organic material on the immediate surface
Surface run-off
Water moves across the surface = stream, river etc
Through flow
Beneath the surface
Water transferred through the lower soil towards rivers and groundwater flow
Typically slow
Recharge
Hydrologic process where water moves downward from surface water to
groundwater
The primary method through water entering aquifer
Source
Rivers beginning
Cloud formation
Clouds form when water molecules aggregate (join)
Frequently at altitude where dew point occur
