Cylinder Procedure Flashcards
IC at incidents involving cylinders will be supported in the decision-making process by whom?
The HMEPO who will be mobilised to the incident.
A HMEPO has recieved specific training in what?
Dealing with acetylene cylinders and hazard zone management
At what temperatures do cylinders lose their tensile strength.
300 degrees for steel
200-250 for aluminum
If any steel cylinder is believed to be substantially heated and at risk of failure, an initial hazard zone must be set up of how big?
200 m
As soon as a cylinder is discovered in a fire, regardless of contents, what should the IC make every effort to do?
Extinguish any fire effecting the cylinder and apply a cooling spray directly onto any affecting cylinders.
When working withing 25m of a heated cylinder that is not acetylene, crews should be in what level of PPE?
Full PPE and Breathing Apparatus
When sending an informative message for cylinders that are not acetylene which temperature needs to be stated,
Only the highest teperature recorded.
What should be included in an informative sent to control when cylinders are involved?
Actions taken the number of evacuees the HZ size and road closures The RVP and approach route Tactical mode
What initial action should be taken if an acetylene cylinder has been heated to a temperature above 300 degrees?
cylinder should be substantially cooled for at least an hour to reduce the risk of failure.
What is the CAP test ?
Stopping the Cooling after 1 hour
monitor the cylinder with TIC and record temp
Observe for any violent steaming or rapid drying out of the cylinder surface
Leave cooling water off for 15 minutes
When can the hazard zone be removed from an acetylene cylinder involved in a fire?
When it has passed the CAP test.
What are composite cylinders usually used for?
LPG used for domestic use typically BBQs
What colour is an acetylene cylinder?
Maroon
If a disposable cylinder is believed to be involved in a fire, how should it be treated?
As if it were any other cylinder that is not acetylene.
What is the hazard zone for a confirmed or suspected acetylene cylinder involved in a fire?
200m making use of all substantial cover
How many times is the CAP test carried out?
4 times (approx and hour)
If, at any time the cylinder is deemed to have failed the CAP test, what actions should be taken?
Cooling water should immediately be applied for 1 hour before commencing another CAP test.
What do the 2 colours on a cylinder shoulder identify?
The contents and the hazards
How should a steel cylinder be treated if involved in a fire?
Should be cooled until it reaches ambient temperature using the TIC
Where a composite cylinder has been involved in a fire and has failed, what action should be taken?
The contents should be allowed to burn off before extinguishing the fire.
When discovering a cylinder involved in a fire, crews should do what?
Lash off branches set on a cooling spray and then withdraw or use ground monitors if unable to lash off.
At what distance should crews being wear BA when at an incident involving cylinders?
within 25m of a heated cylinder.
At what temperature does an acetylene cylinder lose its tensile strength?
300 degrees
How does a cylinder fail a CAP test
Where there is a presence of a hot spot on the cylinder wall with a TIC
