Cysts Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is a cyst?
a pathological cavity, not formed by the accumulation of pus, with fluid or semi-fluid contents
mechanisms for cyst growth
epithelial proliferation
bone resorption
internal hydraulic osmotic pressure
Radicular cyst typical age (decade at presentation)
3rd and 4th
residual cysts typical age (decade at presentation)
4th and 5th
odontogenic keratocyst typical age (decade at presentation)
3rd and 4th
eruption cyst typical age (decade at presentation)
1st and 2nd
nasopalitine cyst typical age (decade at presentation)
4th, 5th and 6th
solitary bone cyst typical age (decade at presentation)
2nd
radicular cysts - most common site
tooth bearing areas of jaws, most commonly anterior maxilla
residual cyst most common sites
mandibular premolar area
keratocyst most common site
angle of mandible
dentigerous cyst most common site
mandibular 3rd molar
followed by maxillary canine
eruption cysts most common site
deciduous and permanent teeth, most commonly anterior to first permanent molar
nasopalatine cyst site
nasopalatine canal
solitary bone cyst site
mandible
radicular cyst common clinical signs
slowly enlarging swellings
frequently asymptomatic
discovered by radiography of non-vital teeth
residual cyst common clinical signs
frequently asymptomatic
slowly enlarging swelling
odontogenic keratocyst common clinical signs
usually asymptomatic
discovered on examination or radiograph
tooth displacement
occasionally paraesthesia of lower lip
dentigerous cyst common clinical signs
may grow to large size until discovered - like keratocyst
mostly discovered on radiograph due to tooth eruption failure
nasopaline cyst common clinical signs
swelling of anterior plate of floor of nose
solitary bone cyst common clinical signs
discovered on radiograph
suitable radiographic views for cysts in the maxilla
periapcals and oblique occlusal
panoramic radiograph or lateral oblique
true lateral (anterior maxilla)
suitable radiographic views for cysts in the mandible
periapicals and true occlusals
panoramic radiograph or lateral oblique
CBCT indications for imaging of cysts
may be useful in planning surgery of large cysts, particularly in the maxilla
