-extensive network of protein fibres in the cytoplasm
-made of 2 protein fibres

A
-solid strnads - made of actin
-fibres cause cell movement and movement of some organelles by moving against each other

A
-hollow strands - made of tubulin
-organelles are moved along these fibres using ATP

The importance of the cytoskeleton
A
-strengthens + supports - mechanical strength to maintain shape
-aids intracellular movement - by forming tracks where organelles can move
-has hair like extensions to aid cellular movement (cilia + flagella)
