D4.1 Natural Selection Flashcards
(15 cards)
Natural selection causes
Overproduction of offspring, variation, and reproduction between genetically diverse parents
Selection pressure
Pressures influencing reproduction
Density dependent factors
Factors dependent on the density of a population -> food
Density independent factors
Pressures not dependent on the density of a population -> climate
Biological fitness
Ability of an organism to reproduce & pass on genetics
Intraspecific competition
Same species compete for resources & mates
Interspecific competition
Different species compete for resources
Sexual dimorphism
When sex’s of the same species look different
Gene pool
Sum of all the alleles present in a population
Allele frequency
Frequency of allele in a population
Allele freq. = # of copies of x in pop./total # of genes in a pop.
Genetic drift
Random event altering gene frequencies.
Stabilizing selection
Favors average individuals over extremes -> leads to individuals looking the same
Directional selection
One extremes is favored
Disruptive selection
Both extremes are favored -> may lead to formation of a new species
Hardy Weinberg equation
calculates the genetic variation of a population at equilibrium
