Damage/Egress Flashcards

Q

KNOWN OR SUSPECTED AIRCRAFT DAMAGE/ABNORMAL

VIBRATIONS

A

Symptoms:
● Known or suspected aircraft damage
● Abnormal vibrations

WARNING Known or suspected aircraft damage that appears minor on the surface may in fact involve structural or flight control components. It is imperative that known or suspected damage be thoroughly investigated prior to continuing flight.

NOTE A reduction in airspeed between 75 to 100 KIAS may reduce vibrations and improve flight characteristics (weather, flight conditions, and distance from landing area permitting).

Corrective action:

If severe vibrations and/or drastically altered flight characteristics:
1. LAND/DITCH IMMEDIATELY

WARNING The potential loss of the airframe after aircrew egress is not sufficient cause to continue flight.

If moderate vibrations:

  1. LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

If slight vibrations of unknown origin or aircraft damage is known or suspected

  1. LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE

Q

LAND/DITCH IMMEDIATELY

A

Possible symptoms:
● Severe vibrations of unknown origin
● Insufficient power or control authority to maintain flight
● Other confirmed emergency procedure leading to land/ditch immediately

Corrective action:

  1. WHEELS - AS REQUIRED
  2. FLOATS - AS REQUIRED
  3. SLIDING DOOR - AS REQUIRED
  4. LAND/DITCH
  5. EFSLs - BOTH OFF
  6. EMERGENCY ELECTRICAL CUTOFF - AS REQUIRED
  7. ROTOR BRAKE (land only) - ON
  8. EMERGENCY EGRESS – EXECUTE

Q

MALFUNCTIONING CABIN SLIDING DOOR

A

Symptom:
● Cabin sliding door does not fully open or will not secure in the closed position

WARNING A malfunctioning sliding door may present an egress hazard. Over water operations below 200 ft should not be conducted with a malfunctioning door.

Corrective action:

  1. FM - Remain secured to aircraft
  2. Do not use excessive force
    Non-jettisonable door:
  3. Door assembly - Inspect (hatch, roller assembly, and locking mechanism)
  4. Aerodynamic load on door - Reduce (when operations permit)
  5. Door - Secure interior handhold on door to deck tiedown using trail line or strap
  6. Speed - 80 KIAS maximum
  7. LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE

If landing to a ship or other over water egress hazard (e.g., oil rig):

NOTE Flight mechanic visual references for landing could be hindered/altered. TALON line up marks with chair tracks may not be visible.
  1. LH cabin door - Jettison if desired for ease of emergency egress:
    a. Distance from ship should be considered for possible door recovery
    b. Establish safe altitude to reduce door damage
    c. Airspeed at or below 30 KIAS
  2. LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE

UNUSUAL ATTITUDE RECOVERY

A

Symptoms:
● Any unintentional, undesirable, or unsafe aircraft attitude

Corrective action:

  1. LEVEL THE WINGS
  2. NOSE ON HORIZON
  3. CENTER THE BALL
  4. POWER - ADJUST TO MAINTAIN LEVEL FLIGHT

Q

EMERGENCY EGRESS

A
  1. WAIT - Remain seated/in position until violent motion subsides
  2. HOLD - Locate and hold reference point
  3. JETTISON - Jettison primary exit door utilizing emergency release handle
    (as required)
  4. CORDS - Disconnect/remove all cords (ICS, NVG, HUD)
  5. HARNESS - Maintain reference point; release seatbelt harness or gunner’s belt
  6. EGRESS - Primary exit if able; move clear of aircraft and/or debris
  7. INFLATE - Inflate lifevest when clear of aircraft/debris
NOTE ● A wet suit will exhibit some positive buoyancy when immersed. ● In AUF configurations, the aircrew liferaft may be relocated to the left-hand side of the cabin.
