Daniel O’Connell born in 1775 in Kerry. He was born to wealthy Catholic middle-class family. He went to college in France during the “Terror”. The atrocities he witnessed gave him a hatred for violence

Catholic Emancipation

A

O’Connell founded the Catholic Board. In 1823, he founded the Catholic Association to campaign for Catholic emancipation, an end of tithe payments and more rights for tenement farmers. They funded campaigns, supported pro-emancipation politicians, paid legal cost for those arrested + for publicity, through a monthly membership fee

Emancipation act

A

O’Connell ran for Parliament even though he couldn’t take his seat. He won his spot and the British PM feared rebellion if O’Connell couldn’t take his seat. Westminster passed the Emancipation Act in 1829, and O’Connell took his seat

Westminster

A

He campaigned in + out of Westminster for abolition of the tithe payments. In 1938, he had the tithe lowered and mad either, so it was paid to the landlord, not the Protestant church

Fight for repeal

A

In 1830 O’Connell fouded the Repeal association to fight the Act of Union. People paid a small ‘repeal rent’ to fund the campaigns. At the end of the 1830s, O’Connell started holding ‘monster meetings’ with over 100,000 in attendance.

A

At the end of the 1830s, O’Connell started holding ‘monster meetings’ with over 100,000 in attendance. The British feared this could lead to rebellion so they banned a meeting. O’Connell cancelled the event out of fear of violence but many of his followers wanted to go ahead. This lead to a split + the formation of the young irelanders
