Q

What are the disadvantages of Danish seining?

A

-Requires relatively smooth seabed
-Relatively calm weather and low current speeds
-Difficult to use during the night or in fog
-Workload of fishers is higher
-Demands better navigational skills

Q

Why is Danish seining falling out of fashion?

A

-Current trends towards targeting of bottom fish in deeper water
-Number of vessels using this type of fishing has declined

Q

What are the advantages of Danish seines?

A

-Low power and fuel consumption
-Cheaper and less bulky than a trawl, can be used on smaller boats
-Tows are efficient at herding fish into codend
-If good navigational knowledge is there, seine can be used very effectively
-Less damaging to sea bed
-Better quality end product as fish spend less time in the net

16
Q

What does Danish seining require to be successful?

A

-Skill operation is extensive knowledge is required
-Locating the fishing grounds
-Accurate rigging of the gear
-Consideration of tidal streams with relation to the gear

17
Q

How does Danish seining work?

A

-Gear is towed until both ropes are under strain, then winch is engaged
-Winch speed is gradually increased from 15 m/minute to 90m/minute, when around half of ropes are in and the gear has closed up
-Vessels maintains its position or is getting hauled astern by the net

18
Q

What is the sets of deploying a Danish seine net?

A
  1. Vessel shoots dhan and begins shooting ropes
  2. One set of ropes shot 2,000 - 3,500 m long
  3. Seine net shot
  4. Other set of ropes shot 2,000 -3,500 m long
  5. Circle closes and vessel picks up dhan and starts to tow both ropes and net
19
Q

Describe the Danish seine net

A

-Poor man’s trawl
-Resembles a trawl with wings, belly and codend
-Operated differently, no otter doors
-Operated with a set of warps (towing lines, drag lines)

20
Q

Describe physical structure of Danish seine net

A

-A central bag with lateral wings
-Extends 25 -30cm on either side
-Footrope / ground-gear weights and headrope floats

21
Q

What happens during towing?

A

Warps are gradually pulled together, herding the fish in front of the seine
