Data Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is analogue data?
Data that is represented in a physical way
What are some examples of analogue devices?
vinyl records, sundials, analogue watches
What is digital data?
Data stored by computers as a combination of 1s and 0s
What are some examples of digital devices?
microphone, monitor
What are the advantages of analogue and digital data?
analogue:
continuous data is stored so no loss of data quality
digital:
less physical space is required to store the same amount of data
What are the disadvantages of analogue and digital data?
analogue:
Can decline when being copied or transferred due to corruption
digital:
due to data sampling, data is not recorded in its entirety so quality is lost
How do you convert between analogue and digital data?
A/D or D/A
What is sampling frequency?
How many samples are identified per second, determine quality of converted sound data
What are the factors to consider when determining the advantages and disadvantages of digital data storage?
- data retrieval
- efficiency
- expense
- scalability
- management
- accessibility
- security
what are the advantages and disadvantages of data retrieval?
advantages:
- can search through files quickly
- can sort files in different orders
- can copy files
- can arrange folders into different structures
disadvantages:
- can easily lose files due to bad organisation
- all files could be lost if hardware fails
- if cloud storage is used, bad connection could slow down storing data
what are the advantages and disadvantages of efficiency?
advantages:
- can compress data, which allows for faster uploading and downloading of files
- a warning is given before overwriting files so you don’t accidentally change them
- you can physically reorganise your files using defragmentation
disadvantages:
- if files are fragmented, they could slow access time
what are the advantages and disadvantages of expenses?
advantages:
- optical storage is cheap
- magnetic storage is fairly cheap
disadvantages:
- solid state storage can be expensive
what are the advantages and disadvantages of security?
advantages:
- passwords can be placed on files
- files can be encrypted
- files can be made read-only
- if using RAID1, no data is lost if one drive fails
disadvantages:
- data could be stolen or attacked by unauthorised users
- cloud storage is susceptible to unauthorised access
- weak passwords can be guessed
what are the advantages and disadvantages of accessibility?
advantages:
- specialist devices can convert text data to other data, such as sound
- device settings can be changed to suit needs
- there are specialist input devices
disadvantages:
- not all programs work with specialist devices
- specialist devices can be more expensive
what are the advantages and disadvantages of management?
advantages:
- you can set access level rights
- you can set different file properties such as read-only to different users
disadvantages:
- a system manager needs to be appointed, which can be costly
what are the advantages and disadvantages of scalability?
advantages:
- if there is little storage available, more storage can be added via network attached storage devices, or more cloud storage can be obtained
disadvantages:
- The cost of NAS and cloud storage can become costly depending on how much storage you need
