  • biometric readers; these read fingerprints, handprints or iris for use in personal identification e.g. phone password
  • barcode readers; reads lines of different thickness and coverts them into values
  • smart metres; these accurately record electricity and gas usage and sends readings to the energy supplier
  • optical mark recognition (OMR); these automatically read a form and input the data
  • radio-frequency identification devices; these are used in stocktaking and race timing systems.
