Holy Spirit
Primarily a way of referring to God’s (or Jesus’) presence and action in the world. However, the New Testament often speaks of the Holy Spirit as a distinct person from Jesus and God the Father. The church spelled out the Holy Spirit’s identity more clearly in the years following the writing of the New Testament
parousia
The arrival of Jesus on earth a second time, this time to judge the earth
the Ascension
Jesus’ passage up to heaven forty days after the Resurrection; narrated in Acts 1
Day of Pentecost
Also known as the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of First Fruits, Pentecost celebrated the end of the grain harvest, fifty days after Passover. For Christians, it represents the birthday of the church
Martyr
Someone who dies for what s/he believes
Jerusalem Council
The name often given to the meeting in which it waws decided that Gentiles could become Christians without being circumcised
repentance
Changing decisively from one attitude or way of life to another
kerygma
The basic Christian message
baptism with the Holy Spirit
A dipping in water that symbolized the washing away of one’s sins
