Day Care Flashcards
(20 cards)
What does social development include?
child’s attachment with care giver, interaction with peers and levels of aggression
What did Clarke-Stewart find about day care and attachment in 1988?
No evidence of attachment differences in quality of attachments between children cared for by child minders and those in group based care
What did Belsky and Rovine find about day care and attachment in 1988
Children who spent more than 20 hours a week in day care were more insecurely attached than home cared children
Which 3 psychologists conducted studies into the effects of daycare on peer relations?
Campbell 2000, Field 1991, DiLalla 1988
Give details and results of Campbell’s 2000 study
Swedish, 18m-3.5yrs, observed and assessed using Caldwell’s HOME, at 6.5yrs social competence tested. Long days in care under 3.5yrs= less socially competent, high quality care before 3.5yrs= better social abilities
What did Field find in the 1991 study into peer relations and day care?
more time in day care = more friends and more extra curricular activities, high quality care = more physical affection during peer interaction
What did DiLalla find in the 1988 study into peer relations and day care?
Negative correlation between amount of time in care and amount of pro social behaviour, more time in care = less cooperative with other children
What are 3 strengths and 1 weakness of Campbell’s research?
Control group: families who had applied for day care but didn’t get it (same kind of families as day care ones), prospective study, controlled for home environment but used self report at age 15
Which 3 psychologists conducted research into the effects of day care on aggression?
Belsky 2006 (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), Baker 2005, Borge 2004
What are the details of Belsky’s 2006 study? What was found about children’s aggression?
Prospective, US, 1000+ from birth to 4.5yrs. Children who experienced day care = higher cognitive and language development but higher aggression and less obedient
What were the details and results of Baker’s 2005 study into aggression?
33000 children, 2-4yrs, 2 parent families, post-day care = 24% increased aggression in Quebec but 1% in Canada
What were the details and results of Borge’s 2004 study into aggression?
Canada, representative sample 2-3yrs, home vs day care, role of family background, sibling number and family functioning included in assessment, aggression significantly higher in home reared
How does quality of provision affect the success of day care?
Quality > than amount, disruption minimised if low staff turnover, good ratio of staff to children and child has attachment figure
How does temperament affect the success of day care?
extrovert enjoys groups/interaction, introverts needs space/isolation, easy going are adaptable, difficult are resistant and challenging
How does the type of day care provision affect the success of day care?
Physical environment is safe and stimulating, best child:adult ratio 1:1, relationship between carer and child important
How does time in day care affect the success of day care?
age of starting: first 3.5yrs crucial for development, length of day = length of separation
Who conducted a study into 3 types of daycare?
Melhuish 1990
relatives, childminder, private nursery. At 18m: highest language skills relatives (and @ 3yrs), lowest in nursery. At 3yrs: highest pro social behaviour at nursery
What are the 5 aspects of day care that Campbell found to be most beneficial?
low adult to child ratio, small group size, mixed ages in groups, well trained staff and low staff turnover
How has Campbell’s research affected government policy?
Guidelines on how day care is organised: safe, warm environment for attachment
How has attachment research (Robertson and Robertson) affected hospital practise?
Substitute emotional care and visits from attachment figures to reduce affects of separation
