what is deterrence?
- put people off crime
- unpleasant prison experience
- two levels
1. general = send message to society that crime isn’t tolerated
2. individual = prevent crimes repeating
what is incapacitation ?
- offenders will be sentenced a length of time to keep them away from the public

victims seek justice for crime committed against them
what is rehabilitation?
