What did many philosophers want to do related to Death and the Afterlife?

A

Many philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and the Stoics wanted to ease the ‘sting’ of death by reducing our attachment to this life and offering an eternal alternative.

Q

What did Empicurus say about death?

A

Epicurus: “Therefore the most frightful of evils, death, is nothing to us, seeing that when we exist, death is not present, and when death is present, we do not exist. Thus it is nothing to the living or the dead, seeing that the former do not have it, and the latter no longer exist.”

this was Epicurus’ solution to the problem of what happens when we die but this was criticised due to the problem of the anticipation of one’s death.

Q

what do Christians believe about life after death?

A

Humankind has souls that are capable of surviving bodily death.

After death, people are resurrected and continue in a new and different dimension. (eternity with God)

Problems: no empirical evidence for heaven or hell.

Hell is incompatible with the characteristics of God being omnibenevolent, omnipotent and omniscient.

An all-loving God wouldn’t condemn people to eternal damnation and an all-seeing God surely knows which of his creation would fall and therefore suffer eternally in hell

Theodicy: justification of the righteousness of God despite the existence of evil.

Q

what are the influences of the old testament on the afterlife?

A

In the Old Testament, there was very little suggestion that life exists after death however there were references to the possibility that death is not the end; death of Abraham: “Then Abraham breathed his last and died a good old age, an old man and full of years; he was gathered to his people.”

Daniel 12:2 “Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.”

Q

what was the significance of the resurrection (death and the afterlife)?

A

Jesus had a bodily resurrection and spoke of a physical life after death in which there would be reward and punishment for deeds done in this life.

The resurrection of Jesus provided comfort in times of despair for Christians as when they lose a loved one there is the possibility of being reunited in heaven.

The death of Jesus was also a sacrifice for the sins of all humankind. He bridged the gap of sin between humans and God (epistemic distance). It made it so humans can enter God’s kingdom with repentance.

Q

what is heaven like?

A

According to Paul, upon death a person’s body will be transformed into a spiritual being and people will have a new life in a new kind of existence. The transformation will restore the God-humankind relationship. Aquinas speaks of a beatific vision that says the end is when the human will achieve perfect happiness.

Q

what does Dante describe hell to be like?

A

Dante describes hell as being an utterly dysfunctional state which lacks faith in God and any hope. There are nine circles in hell (limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery). Betrayal of special relationships sits at the centre of these circles. In Dante’s hell, there is no salvation as the people who go there have alienated themselves from God’s grace and love by their own choices.

Q

what are the ideas surrounding purgatory?

A

Purgatory is not mentioned in the New Testament, however, it is a state of cleansing that may be required after death, before a person can enter heaven.

This happens because heaven is morally perfect therefore its inhabitants should also be morally perfect.

If heaven is morally perfect then the inhabitants must be incapable of sin- meaning in heaven humans acquire a new nature or that our nature has transformed,

Roman Catholics believe that although most people are ‘good’ upon death they are still not worthy of meeting God meaning that they need cleansing

Purgatory is the opportunity for people to be cleansed of their sins so that they do not have to spend eternity separated from God- as hell isn’t part of an omnibenevolent God’s plan.

sometimes referred to as predestination. It is the belief that God chooses the eternal destiny of heaven or hell for each person.

17
Q

what did John Calvin preach about?

18
Q
A
18
Q

what is limited election?

A

Westminster Confession of Faith says that some people are predestined unto everlasting life and others foreordained to everlasting death. It is based on the belief that God predestines everyone to heaven or hell before we even exist.

19
Q

Matthew 22:14?

A

“Many are invited but few are chosen”

20
Q

what did Augustine argue about limited election?

A

Augustine argues that God’s grace is needed for salvation; limited election would argue that God predestines who will receive this grace and therefore be saved.

21
Q

what does Calvin say about limited election?

A

argues that people must act morally, as if there was unlimited election, as we do not know who the elect are or not.

22
Q

what is unlimited election?

A

The belief that although heaven is available to all of us, not all will be saved.
This idea stems from Karl Barth. He argues that because Jesus was God incarnate, he was elected and it is he who elects humans.

23
Q

what is universalism (apokatastasis)?

A

The notion that we will all be saved.

24
Q

what did John hick believe about universalism?

A

John Hick believed that for an omnibenevolent God to exist, then all must be saved as it is not logical for an all-loving God to condemn people to hell.

25
Q

problems with universalism

A

It makes people question the point of living a moral life in this world if all will end up in the kingdom of heaven.

26
Q

what is the parable of the sheep and goat (Matthew 25)?

A

Parable that talks about the end of time- God will separate people from one another just as a shepherd separates his sheep from goats; separating those who actively seek justice from those who do not.

Matthew 25:40 “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”- we are all made imago dei (in the image of God) when we help others we are helping God and when we ignore those in need, we are ignoring God.

27
Q

what is the kingdom of God?

A

The Kingdom of God could either be an actual place, spiritual state or symbol of a moral life.

28
Q

what is inaugurated eschatology?

A

The kingdom of God began during Jesus’ lifetime.

29
Q

what is the significance of inaugurated eschatology?

A

The teachings of Jesus and examples make the Kingdom of God appear in this world now.

30
Q

what does the Lord’s prayer say about the kingdom of God?

A

The Lord’s prayer: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven” - God’s kingdom present current and an actual place.

31
Q

beliefs about the kingdom of God?

A

Other teachings talk about the Kingdom of God being a spiritual state, the righteous living harmoniously with God in a redeemed world.

Others believe that you can prosper in this world, however, this is short-lived and if you don’t give back then you will not prosper in the afterlife. Those underprivileged in the physical world will be rewarded in the afterlife.
