Demure
If a person is reserved, modest, and shy, you can call them demure.
The boy was demure because he didn’t raise his hand often.
Impartial
(remember the prefix im- means not, so not-partial)
If you have the tendency to treat everyone equally, fair and just then people may call you impartial.
The leader of a small group needs to be impartial when they divide up the work to do.
Discourse
Written or spoken communication is called discourse.
The discourse on the television was vulgar.
Amorphous
Not clearly defined shape; Unclassifiable.
An amorphous style of writing. An amorphous style of art.
Antipathy
Feeling of dislike towards another person.
The two competitors had always had a strong antipathy towards one another.
Admonish
To warn someone firmly.
She admonished him to eat any more chilly than he already had.
Ambiguous
Having more than one meaning. ex: The question is rather ambiguous.
Unclear due to a choice between alternatives having not been made.
Ambivalent
Unsure one way or the other.
America is ambivalent on whether to send ground troops back to Iraq and Syria to fight ISIS
Animosity
Strong hatred towards another person.
The animosity between the two ex friends was growing.
Aloof
Not involved with or friendly towards other people.
He was aloof from the rest of the baseball team.
Annex
To add as an extra part; seize, conquer, take possession of.
In 1922 Ukraine was annexed by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Altruism
To do good for others instead of ones self.
Many wonder whether giving is driven by altruism or self-centered motives.
Aggrandize
To increase one’s power, or reputation.
Investors are often willing to cheat in order to aggrandize themselves.
Allege
To claim or assert that someone had done something wrong.
He is alleged to have robbed a bank on January 1, 2014.
Ascertain
To find out or determine.
Sherlock attempted to ascertain the cause of the accident.
Accord
To give someone power or to be in agreement or harmony.
The boy had accorded his friend little notice.
The two sides, however, accorded on one point.
Adamant
Refusing to be persuaded. If you are adamant you will not give up your point of view.
He was adamant during the debate
Abdicate
To renounce one’s throne or fail to fulfill.
The governor should not abdicate from office because of the shortage of water.
Jettison
To abandon or discard.
People are often forced to jettison certain behaviors while growing up to be able to fit in with societal norms.
Clairvoyant
To have supernatural abilities. For example you are clairvoyant if you are able to see into the furture.
After seeing me move objects with my mind he described me as clairvoyant
Frugal
Economical in regard to money or food.
He was a very frugal person come the holidays; he never gave gifts to anyone.
Accolade
To acknowledge someone for their merit or success. To make someone distinct for what they have done.
The accolade of a visit from Warren Buffet delighted the boy.
Burgeon
To begin to grow or increase rapidly; Thrive
Investors are eager for cash in Burgeoning markets.
Recalcitrant
Having an uncooperative attitude towards people of authority.
My eighth grade science class is very recalcitrant.
