Minimize kinking and twisting of the anchor chain
What are detachable links?
Links designed to break apart and attach shots of chain together.
What three colors are detachable links painted to indicate shots and how many fathoms for each color?
Red-15 fathoms
White-30 fathoms
Blue-45 fathoms
And so on.
At the end of each fathom, one link is painted what color on each side of the fathom and something is wrapped around it. Explain.
At the end of the 15th, 30th and 45th fathom, the link is painted white. A turn of wire for how many shots indicates which shot. 15th is 1 wrap, 30th is 2, 45th is 3 and so on.
What color are the last two shots painted and what do they mean?
Yellow- warning
Red- danger
They mark getting close to the bitter end.

What are whelps?
Raised areas on the anchor windlass to engage the links of the chain.
What is the HAWSE pipe?
A large pipe that the anchor cable runs through from the deck out the side of the ship.
What’s the bullnose? What’s it used for?
Forward most chock on the ship. Used for towing.
What are bitts?
A pair of vertical metal posts on deck used to secure mooring lines.
What is a chock?
Metal fitting that serves as a lead for lines from ship to pier or ship to ship.
