Deck 3 Flashcards
What is a solution?
A homogeneous mixture where one substance has been dissolved in another substance
Is a solution a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture?
homogeneous mixture
In a solution, what is the name for the substance being dissolved?
Solute
In a solution, what is the substance called in which the solute is dissolved?
Solvent
Why can more salt be dissolved in hot water that in cold water?
B/c when a liquid is warmed, its molecules move more quickly and that will dissolve the salt more quickly
If you want sweet iced tea, would it be better to add the sugar before or after you cool the tea?
Before you cool the tea
What is a suspension?
A mixture in while one or more substances are immiscible
What does immiscible mean?
It means the one substance won’t mix with another (Water/oil)
What is an emulsifier?
A substance that helps to keep particles in suspension
What is a colloid?
A suspension with very tiny particles suspended in it
What would happen to the mayonnaise if the egg yolk were left out of the recipe?
Then mayonnaise would begin to get chunky
How is a suspension different from a true solution?
True solutions are homogeneous mixtures while suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures
What is solubility?
The measure of how much solute can be dissolved in a given amount of solvent
What are the three factors that most affect solubility?
Temperature, pressure, polarity
What is Precipitate?
The name given to particles that come out of a saturated solution
Why are soft drinks canned or bottles at low temps and high pressures?
So that there will be more fizz
Why do soft drinks eventually go flat once opened?
B/c gas escapes through the opening
If no additional sugar has been added to a saturated solution of sugar water, what can you conclude about the temp and/or pressure if you notice sugar beginning to settle on the bottom of the cup?
It is saturated b/c the water cannot dissolve any more of the sugar; The temp dropped
What are the main ingredients of soft drinks?
Water, corn syrup, carbonation
What is the most popular drink in the United States? The second most popular?
Water, soda
What are the two most popular sweeteners used in soft drinks?
Corn syrup, aspartame
Why are recipes for soft drinks considered top secret?
So that no other company can copy the recipe
What is a dilute solution?
A solution when there is a small amount of solute in it
What is a concentrated solution?
If a solution has a large amount of solute in it
