What is a DVT?

A
  • it is formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, partially or completely occluding blood flow
  • more at risk due to gravity uterus on the inferior vena cava and an increase in coagulation factors.

A
  • pain in the area where the clot is
  • redness and swelling in the area
  • difficulty weight bearing on affected leg

  • Pulmonary embolism

  • Doppler

Role of the midwife in preventing a DVT?

A
  • VTE risk assessment at booking, during labour and postnatally
  • Apply TED stockings if needed
  • Promote hydration, mobility and nutrition
  • Advise if travelling = leg exercises, walk about where possible, don’t drink alcohol as can cause dehydration
