Definition spm Flashcards
(22 cards)
Tissues
A group of specialised cells with a common structure and function
Permanent tissues
Consist of more mature cells that are either undergoing differentiation or have already undergone differentiation
Mitosis
A division of the nucleus to produce two new daughter cells containing chromosomes identical to the parent cell
Meiosis
A process of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in daughter cells to half of that of the parent cell
Malnutrition
Results from an unbalanced diet, in which certain nutrients are deficient, in excess or are in the wrong proportions
Digestion
The process that breaks down complex food substances into simpler, soluble molecules that are small enough for the body to absorb
Single blood circulatory system
The blood flows thru the heart only once in a complete blood circulation
Double blood circulatory system
The blood flows thru the heart twice in a complete blood circulation
Closed circulatory system
Blood is confined to the heart and blood vessels in a closed circulatory system
Haemolymph
Circulating blood-like fluid in an open circulatory system
Vaccine
A liquid which is injected into the bloodstream and contains killed or weakened bacteria or viruses which stimulate the lymphocytes to produce antibodies
Endocrine glands
Ductless glands that secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
Spermatogenesis
The process of sperm formation
Haemophilia
Inability of blood to clot after injury
Genotype
The genetic composition of an organism which is not manifested
Phenotype
The characteristic that are expressed externally in an organism
Autosomes
All the chromosomes in a cell which are not sex chromosomes
Sex chromosomes
Chromosomes which determine the sex of an organism
Mutation
A sudden random change in the genetic composition of a cell
Variations
The phenotypic differences among the individuals of a species
Photosynthesis
A process by which glucose is produced from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight
