Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the state of a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence.
It is characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged.

Refers to a subjective concept related to personal experience of a disease or injury

Refers to the fact that health and wellbeing is constantly changing.

Spiritual dimension of H+W

Relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics in the minds and consciene of people. It includes the concepts of hope, peace, a guiding sense of meaning and purpose in life, a sense of connection or belonging, and reflection on a person’s place in the world.

Optimal H+W
Refers to the highest level of health and wellbeing a person can realistically achieve at any particular time. it takes into account genetics and the environments in which people live

refers to an individual’s or populations overall level of health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability, and levels of disease risk factors
self assessed health status
reflects a person’s perception of their own health and wellbeing at a given point in time
life expectancy
the number of years of life, on average, remaining to an individual at a particular age if death rates do not change
health adjusted life expectancy (HALE)
the average length of time an individual at a specific age can expect to live in full health; that is, time lived without the health consequences of disease or injury
mortality
the number of deaths in a population in a given period
maternal mortality
death of a mother during pregnancy, childbirth or within six weeks of delivery
infant mortality
the rate of deaths of infants before their 1st birthday, usually expressed per 1000 live births
under-5 mortality
the (rate) number of deaths of children under 5 years of age per 1000 live births
morbidity
ill health in an individual and levels of illness (ill health) within a population
Illness vs Disease
Illness is a subjective concept as to how the illness is experienced. Disease refers to the body’s physiological response
Incidence
refers to the number ( or rate) of new cases of a disease/condition in a population during a given period
