Humanism
A secular moral philosophy that trusts the scientific method and attempts to be ethical and promote human flourishing without religion.
Augustinian theodicy
A theodicy that says that all evil is either a result of sin or a punishment for sin and that God is not ultimately responsible for evil.
Prosecute
Conduct legal proceedings against a person or organisation .
The Four noble truths
- Suffering exist
- Suffering is caused by selfish desire
- Suffering can be overcome
- The eightfold path is the way to overcome suffering
The Golden rule
Treat others the way you would like to be treated and do not do things to others that you would not like done to you.
Evil
A word we give to things we experience as very painful or which cause immense suffering.
Utilitarianism
A moral philosophy that aims to maximise happiness in society. Everyone’s happiness is considered equally important.
Tagging, electronic monitoring
Electronically monitoring an offenders whereabouts. Can be used to set a curfew or prevent them from going to certain areas altogether.
Dukkha
Suffering. Stress. Dissatisfaction. The feeling that things are not quite as they should be.
Community payback order
Completing a certain number of hours unpaid work or attending a treatment program to help with addiction issues.
Qualities of God
Omnipotent- all-powerful
Omniscient- all-knowing
Omnibemevolent- all-good
Nibbama/Nirvana
Enlightenment. The goal of Buddhism. Complete liberation from suffering.
Retribution
Attempting to rebalance the scales of justice. Giving punishments that fit the severity of the crime as closely as possible.
Suffering
Anything experienced as negative. Could be caused by natural events, other people, or our minds/emotions.
Determinism
All events are caused by past events. Given what the past is, the current present is the only one that was ever possible. There is only one possible future.

Irenaeus theodicy
We need suffering in order for us to develop into compassionate, strong individuals. Without the possibility of evil, we would not truly be able to be good.
The cycle of Samsara
The Buddhist cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth. Determined by our past actions(kamma)
Free will
The ability to control our thoughts, desires, and actions. It is necessary if we are to be considered responsible for the things we do.
Poverty
Lack of money. Leads to crime because of both need and greed.
The three poisons.
Greed, hatred, ignorance. All of these cause suffering in the one experiencing them and in people around them.

Anatta
No permanent self. Each person is made home of five skandhas (components), all of which constantly change
Crime prevention
Trying to keep people from committing crimes. Supporting vulnerable people and communities through education, role models, and social services.
