What is the definition of a family?
The ABS defines a family as:
Two or more persons, one of whom is at least 15 years old, who are related by blood, marriage (registered or de facto), adoption, step or fostering, who are usually resident in the same household.
What is family law?
A body of law that attempts to resolve conflicts and encourage cooperation within families and between family members.
What is forced marriage?
A forced marriage is one where a person gets married without freely and fully consenting because they are incapable of understanding the nature and effect of a marriage ceremony, for reasons including age and mental capacity.
A person can be coerced through obvious means such as psychological oppression, durress, abuse of power or taking advantage of one’s vulnerability
What is adoption?
The permanent transfer of all legal rights and responsibilities of being a parent from a child’s birth parents to the adoptive parents.
What is local adoption?
Adopting a child from NSW whose parents are making an adoption decision for their child
What is out-of-home-care adoption?
Adopting a child in NSW from out of home care (including foster care)
What is inter-country adoption?
Adopting a child from overseas
What is intrafamily adoption?
Adopting a step child or child within your family
What is divorce?
The legal dissolution of a marriage

What is the definition of neglect?
An ongoing failure by a parent to provide a child with the basics for proper growth and development.
