Colonisation
A different system of government established over another group of people.
It involves the colonisers asserting their own laws over the Peoples
Invasion
The act of forcibly taking over the land belonging to other people
Resistance
The refusal to accept or comply with something.
*Aboriginal Peoples resisted physically and politically
Settlement
An official agreement intended to resolve a dispute or conflict
Genocide
Violent attacks with a specific intent to destroy a whole or part of a nation, ethnic, racial or religious group.
Shared Histories
Historical experiences, events or periods that are experienced and common between two or more individuals or groups
Social Justice
A principle that tries to address inequalities, giving people social and economic independence.
It shapes the interaction of people, communities and governments.
Human Rights
Universal rights possessed by every human being, they cannot be overridden by public interests. They are basic rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to.
Sovereignty
The legal recognition of ownership of land and territory.
Terra Nullius
‘The land belonging to no one’, used to describe unoccupied land
Native title
Native Title (capitalised) - relates to the legislation
native title (lowercase) - relates to the concept
Native titles is a form of land title which recognises Aboriginal Peoples as the rightful owners of the land.
Customary lore
Laws based on traditions and customs rather than written law
Customary Law
Unwritten laws which change slightly overtime and passed down through generations
Traditional Law
Connected to the Dreaming and provides rules on how to interact with the land, kinship and communities.
Dreaming
Can be seen as the embodiment of Aboriginal creation

- It explains creation and laws which are linked to specific places on Country
Dreaming Definition
Dreaming gives meaning to human life and translated theories and their close relationship to the land.
Country
The land to which one belongs to, both spiritual and cultural elements and contains complex laws about law, cultural practices, family and identity.
Country is the basis for all Aboriginal communities.
