Conscious?

A

Contains info that we are aware of and have easy access to

Pre-Conscious?

A

Holds onto info until it is decided if it is threatening to the conscious thought

Unconscious?

A

Holds all the info that the conscious cannot deal with. We are not aware of the thoughts here as they are hidden and could be potentially destructive and often of a sexual or violent nature

Oral stage?

A

From birth toll around 15 months

-Focus of pleasure is on the mouth

Anal stage?

A

From around 15 months to 3 years

-Gain pleasure from retaining or expelling faeces

Phallic stage?

A

From around 3-5 years

  • Pleasure on genitals
  • where the Oedipus and Electra complex occur

A

From around 5 years to puberty

-sexual drives repressed

From puberty onwards

-sexual pleasure on genitals but this time shown through relationships with members of the opposite sex

  • They can distort reality
  • they are a way of avoiding unwanted info getting to ourselves or the outside world

an example of a defence mechanism that occurs when an individual keeps anxiety provoking thoughts out of their conscious awareness possibly as a way of coping
