Immigration
The movement of people into a country or region from other countries or regions.
Emigration
The act of leaving one’s country to go and live permanently in another country.
Internal migration
People relocating within a country e.g. for education or employment.
International migration
People moving from one country to another, this happens for many reasons, for example for increased employment opportunities or to escape conflict.
In migration
To move around one’s own country to settle in a new location.
Out migration
To leave an area and settle in a new location within one’s own country.
Net migration
The difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants throughout the year.
Origin
The place from which a migrant comes from.
Destination
The place the migrant is travelling to.
Migration stream
A pattern of migration established by a group of people with common characteristics, for example the same ethnic group or people from the same geographical origin.
Counterstream/Reverse flow
In migration, migration that moves in the opposite direction to a migrant stream.
Chain migration
The process by which migrants from a particular town follow others from that town to a particular destination.
Relay migration
Occurs when at different stages in a family’s life cycle different people take responsibility for migration to improve the financial position of the family.
Stepped migration
A series of migrations from a person’s place of origin where each stage of migration is a shorter journey than one long distance migration.
Voluntary migration
Where the migrant has a choice whether to migrate or not.
Forced migration
When people are made to leave a country, for example because of a natural disaster or war.
