Human resources management
Integrated sets of policies, strategies, programs, processes implemented in an organization that focuses on the effective deployment and development of its employees.
Corporate Strategy
A strategy that focuses on the overall scope and direction of the company. (What business are we in? What do we do?)
Business Strategy
Focuses on value creation through the development of a sustainable competitive advantage.
HR Strategy
Focuses on developing and implementing people processes and systems that contribute to developing and maintaining a competitive advantage.
Discrimination
Exclusion of members of certain groups based on criteria that are not job-related, such as sex, gender, ethnicity.
Bona fide occupational qualification
A justifiable reason for discrimination based on business reasons or safety.
Reasonable accommodation
Making adjustment to working conditions to prevent discrimination.
Harassment
any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates a person. Managers need to ask themselves: would a reasonable person consider certain behaviour as harassment.
Employment Standards
Minimum obligations of employers, ex. Hours of work, minimum wages, overtime pay, vacation pay, etc.
Diversity Management
Optimizes the different background of employees to achieve business success.
Organizational culture
The sets of beliefs and values that guide the conduct of employees. It is the personality of the company
Employee Engagement
The amount of commitment and employee has toward the organization.
Job Analysis
Process of obtaining information about duties, tasks, skills knowledge and abilities with the job and to know what the job is right now. HR representative job. Needs to be done before writing a job description.
Job Design
What the job should be ideally. Role of Line Manager. Process of defining and organizing the tasks and duties to be completed.
Strategic planning
Making decisions about long term business objectives
HR planning
Planning to ensure the organization has people available that have the right competencies and that these people are used effectively in their right capacities.
Recruitment
Process of locating and encouraging people to apply to a job.
Selection
Process of choosing individuals who have relevant qualifications and who will best perform on the job to fill.
Orientation
Process of familiarizing the new employee with the organization, his tasks and duties.
Training
Acquisition of skills, behaviours and ability to perform the current work
Development
Acquisition of skill, behaviours and ability to perform future work.
Performance management system
Set of integrated management practices that maximize employee potential and help increase employee satisfaction.
Compensation
All form of reward that the employees receive for their work. It can be financial or non-financial.
Job Evaluation
Process of determining the relative worth of the job within an organization
