Definitions H - Neurological System Flashcards
(18 cards)
Blindness
Loss of sight
Brain
Located in skull. Made of three parts:
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brainstem
Brainstem
Part of brain controlling breathing, gagging, swallowing, coughing, heart rate, and opening and closing of blood vessels
CVA (Cerebro Vascular Accident, stroke)
Danae to part of brain due to clot or hemorrhage cutting off blood supply
Cataract
When lens in eye becomes cloudy
Cerebellum
Part of brain located beneath cerebrum. Controls balance and regulates movement
Cerebrum
Center of brain where thought and intelligence occur
Deafness
Hearing loss
Dementia
Progressive loss of mental abilities (e.g. thinking, remembering)
Glaucoma
Damage to optic nerve caused by pressure
Hearing loss
Not being able to hear normal range of sounds heard with normal hearing
Nerves
Structures made of nerve cells (neurons), which carry messages to and from the brain and body
Neurological system
Control and message center of body
Neurons
Nerve cells
Otitis media
Infection of the middle ear
Parkinson’s disease
Progressive nervous disease due to the destruction of brain cells
Sensory organs
Receive impulses from the environment and relay information to brain. Includes skin, eyes, ears, nose, and tongue
Spinal cord
Located within the spine. Connects to brain. Carries messages between brain and body via nerve pathways
