Hierarchy
The hierarchical order of Catholic clergy is Pope, Bishop, priests, deacons.
Pope
The bishop of Rome and the head of the Catholic Church
Cardinal
An important honorary rank bestowed upon members of the clergy by the Pope. (Can vote for Pope until 80)
Apostolic Pronuncio
An ARCHBISHOP who acts as the final Vatican delegate to a country.
Holy See
Pope and the Vatican officials and offices that are responsible for the day-to-day handling of church affairs
Bishop
The head of a specific diocese. He has charge with all the matters of church life within the designated boundaries of his diocese
Priest
Can either be a Diocesan priest (attached to a specific diocese) or a religious priest (member with a particular mission in the Church)
Monsignor
An honorary title given to a Diocesan priest in recognition of his contributions to the life of the church
Deacon
An ordained member of the clergy, ranked under Bishops and priests. A deacon can either be transitional a (step while studying for the priesthood) or permanent
Sister
Member of a religious order of women. They take vows of poverty, Chastity, and obedience and their Ministries to spread the gospel are many and widespread
Brother
A non-ordained member of a religious order of men.
Brothers take vows of poverty Chastity and obedience and their Ministries are also varied and widespread
Laity
(Us) The term used to refer to all baptized Catholics who are not members of the clergy but exercise their baptism by Leading secular life with the presence of Christ
Acolyte
A person who assists at the altar during ceremonies. Other names for acolytes are alter servers
Vatican City
A plot of land in Rome that serves as the worldwide headquarters of the Catholic church and is the official residence of the Pope
Basilica
A church designed as a place of special importance
Cathedral
The OFFICIAL Church of the BISHOP of a diocese. It gets its name from “Cathedra” Latin for “chair”, which is the symbol of The Bishop’s leadership
Chancery
The place or office where the bishop works
Rectory
The place or office where a priest works or lives
Convent
The residents of sisters
Monastery
The residents of a religious community of men or a religious community of women
Sacristy
The Roman at church where the immediate preparations for liturgical services are made and where the ministers vests are stored
Sanctuary
The area of the church that holds the altar, lectern, tabernacle, and sometimes the baptismal font
Altar
The central table on which the Eucharist is celebrated
Lectern
The place where the word of God is proclaimed to the congregation
