Definitions pt1 Flashcards
Polarity
Having opposite poles which creates an uneven charge.
Cohesion
Water is attracted to itself due to the charge from polarity and sticks to itself.
Surface tension
Due to water’s cohesive tendency, while sticking together it forms a net on the surface.
Adhesion
Water’s charge (caused by polarity) causes it to stick to other things.
Capillary action
Because water sticks to itself (cohesion) and other things (adhesion) it is able to climb and defy gravity.
Specific heat capacity
Water takes a long time to boil because it needs to reach a high heat before reaching the point necessary for phase change. Once it reaches this temperature it holds its heat.
Universal solvent
Because water is polar and has both negative and positive charges, it is able to attract solute molecules and dissolve most substances.
Density
Mass per unit of volume
pH
A measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. Measured on a scale from 0-14
Steroid
Any of a large group of fat-soluble organic compounds containing a characteristic chemical ring system. Steroids signal chemical reactions and include the sterols, bile acids, and many hormones.
