What is a flashback?
A scene in a story that occurred before the present time in the story
It provides background or context to the current narrative.
What does foreshadowing mean?
Clues or hints about something that is going to happen later in the story
It creates anticipation for the reader.

Extreme exaggeration used for emphasis or effect
It is not meant to be taken literally.
Define idiom.
An expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its individual words
Examples include ‘kick the bucket’ and ‘break the ice.’

Language that portrays sensory experiences, or experiences of the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch
It helps to create a vivid picture in the reader’s mind.
What is irony?
(1) Dramatic irony, (2) situational irony, (3) verbal irony
Each type involves a discrepancy between expectation and reality.
Define major character.
A main or important character who plays a large role in a story
Major characters are often central to the plot’s development.
What is a metaphor?
The comparison of two unlike things to illuminate a particular quality or aspect of one of those things
Unlike similes, metaphors do not use ‘like’ or ‘as.’
Define minor character.
A character who does not play a large role in a story
Minor characters support the main characters and plot.
What does mood refer to in literature?
The feeling the reader gets from a work of literature
Mood can be influenced by the setting, tone, and style.
What is onomatopoeia?
The use of words whose sound imitates the sounds of what they describe
Examples include ‘buzz,’ ‘bang,’ and ‘sizzle.’
What is personification?
Describing nonhuman animals, objects, or ideas as though they possess human qualities or emotions
This technique helps to create relatability.
Define plot.
The sequence of events in a story
It typically includes exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
What is point of view?
The perspective from which a story is told
Types include 1st person, 2nd person, and 3rd person.
