anesthetic
without feeling, local (area only), vs general (all out)
analgesics
medications to remove pain, anti inflammatory, non-steroidal
NSAIDS
non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
what are human analgesics
ibuprofen, advil, motrin
livestock analgesics
flunixin meglumine, banamine
sedative

2. hollow
3. both sexes have them
4. outgrowth from sinuses
antlers

2. solid
3. only males have them
4. not an outgrowth
how to prevent blood loss before procedure
control stress, use bloodless method, dehorn when young, cauterize
ways to stop bleeding after procedure
use blood stop powder, pack horn cavity with cotton, pull main artery or underside of cut, seat wound with hot iron
swat- ointment for after
how to prevent infection
disinfect tools, disinfect area, clip hair, use bloodless method, use fly repellent, dehorn cattle when it’s fly season, use tetanus antitoxin, return animals to clean environment
how to prevent pain and stress
using a sedative, a local anesthetic and longer lasting painkiller
hot iron
is applied to the horn of young calves under the age of five months
spoon and tube
gouges out horns of young calves up to 60 days
elastrator
stretches an especially made rubber band over the well down into the hairline.
saw, barnes, gougers, clippers
removes the horn when 1/4 to 1/2 of the skin to make certain that the coronary band is completely removed. used on calves over four months of age or after another method no longer works.
caustic paste or stick
prevents horn growth if applied when calf is 3 to 10 days of age, does not remove horns
Importance of dehorning
safety- safer for both people and animals
less stress- animals gain weight better due to less fighting horn animals are more aggressive, and are aware of their horns
higher price on the market; less brushing of carcasses
more room at the feed bunk; less head space
