Q

Subcortical dementia

A

the most common type of VaD. It occurs when small vessels deep in the brain develop thick walls and become stiff. This reduces blood flow, which damages the nerve fibers that carry signals to white matter. This process can cause infarcts near the base of the brain.6

Diagnostic Studies

A

Comprehensive medical, neurologic, and psychologic histories help in determining the presence and cause of dementia.

▪Physical examination and neuroimaging techniques (CT or MRI) may be performed to rule out some causes of dementia.

▪Dementia is often diagnosed when two or more brain functions, such as memory loss or language skills, are significantly impaired.
