dementia aims of treatment
- promote independence
- maintain function

what is first line treatment of dementia?
acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
acetylcholinesterase inhibitors MOA
AChE inhibitors stop the enzyme AChE from breaking down ACh into acetate and choline. This causes ACh to build up in the synapse, which activates cholinergic receptors
examples of ach esterase inhibitors
- donepezil
- galantamine
- rivastigmine
Dementia add on therapy
- glutamate receptor antagonist (memantine)
what type of dementia are ach esterase inhibitors and memantine not recommended
frontotemporal dementia
MHRA warning dementia
increased risk of stroke and death when antipsychotics are used in elderly patients with dementia
