How do rules and laws help us?
They enable us to live together in an organized and fair way. They help us to understand what is allowed and what is not allowed, and how to behave
What kind of things could happen if you break the rules or laws?
Someone may get hurt or be treated unfairly
What is justice?
What is fair, correct or right
What is the justice system?
The police and the courts of law where people are judged
What does the justice system do?
When people have disagreements or when someone is suspected of a crime, the justice system makes sure they are treated fairly and equally
Did the justice system treat everyone equally during apartheid?
No. People who disagreed with the government were not given a fair chance to defend themselves in court
What does it mean to be equal under the law?
Everyone should have a chance for their case to be heard in court. Everyone must be treated the same in court no matter what. The same laws apply to all. No one (including the president) may interfere with the work of the courts
What are rights?
The things that people are allowed to do or have
What are responsibilities?
The things that people are expected to do
How are rights and responsibilities linked?
With every right you have you also have a responsibility.
Eg. Everyone has the right to vote
Everyone has the responsibility to take time to go and vote
What is the constitutional court?
The highest court in SA
When and why was the constitutional court established?
In 1994 to protect the Constitution
What does the constitutional court do?
It makes sure that the rules of the constitution are obeyed and everyone’s rights are protected. It can make decisions when people disagree with what the constitution says

What is the children’s charter?
A list of the rights of children written by both children and adults

The International Summit on the Rights of Children in South Africa

What is a symbol?
A picture or an item that stands for something else or that has a special meaning
What is a motto?
A phrase or sentence describing what an organisation or country aims for or believes in
Countries usually have different symbols to show different things about the country. The symbols also help the people feel that they belong together and should have pride in their country. With the democratic government elected in 1994, SA needed new symbols to reflect the new SA. What did these symbols include?
The coat of arms
The national flag
The national anthem
What is the coat of arms?
It is like a country’s badge.
Where can you find the coat of arms?
It is usually used to stamp official South African items, such as birth certificates or identity documents. Sometimes it appears on buildings too, or on South African coins.
