Describe living arrangements for older adults?
56% not in a home live with spouse. 70% of men live with spouse vs 32% of of men 75+. More women live alone then men =nontrad living situations.
What are the three oldest states?
Florida, maine, west virginia.
What are the demos for institutionalization like?
3.2% of 65+ pop live in a home. Half of those in nursing homes are 85+ due to ADL needs and cognition issues.
Education with older adults?
84% with high school diploma which is a huge increase but older adults still lowest educated population.
Older adults in work force?
20% 65+ still work. 23.4% of men, 15.3% women. Numbers growing.
Can the work force continue to support our aging population?
No. Less people working per older adult today. Less money for services.
What % of older adults report good to excellent health?
44%. Better in whites than minorities.
Chronic conditions in older adults?
Most have at least one. ~75% have hypertension, then ~50% have arthritis. Heart disease is biggest killer.
Obesity in older adults?
Increasing. 38% now. 44% 65-74, 29% 75+
Exercise in older adults?
12% hit guidelines. 37% hit cardio guidelines, 17% hit strengthening.
Most common leisure activities for older adults?
Watching TV.
Leading causes of death?
Heart disease, cancer, lower respiratory disease.
Joint replacements?
More common. TKA rate has tripled, THA has doubled. Younger people getting them.
How many older adults have a disability?
Roughly 36%
