Demography Flashcards
Give a stat on life expectancy
1851: 40 for male, 44 for males- has doubled from victorian levels with around 1 in 3 babies born in 2013 living to be 100 years old
what does Mckeown argue?
that decrease in deaths rate and increase in life expectancy is due to rising wages, Public health policy, provision of social housing for the poor, improvement of maternity care services , introduction of welfare and creation of nhs.
Give a stat on the aging population
increasing numbers of people aged 65+ and declining numbers of children under 16 because the number of older ppl r high cuz when they were born women had large families and now they are much likely to live for longer.
What does chambers argue?
That the elderly are often stereotypes ad unproductive and dependent-often interpreted as economic liability to family members and the state but chambers argues this isn’t the case and that they r a resource and active players in family life and often remain in paid work after reaching retirement age
Give stat on elderly 1 person households
47% of elderly one person households were of this type and typically this is women that live by themselves
